Shopping thrift stores for fashion

The Sacramento Bee

Some shoppers, like Riversider Nichole Slocum, 16, buy clothes at thrift stores and alter them to make them original. If you want cheap vintage variety, here are some shopping tips:

Girls should look for T-shirts and jackets in the boys' section. They'll fit and you're sure to find unique designs.

Check for makeup and deodorant stains; they can be impossible to remove.

Imagine an item's potential. For example, a sparkly knee-length dress could be remade into a shrug or jacket.

Men's jackets can be easily ruined by poor upkeep. Check the lining for rips.

Most thrift-store jeans are out of date -- who gives up on a great pair of jeans? A better bet: casual slacks.

Sneakers at a thrift store are always worn out. Pick up nice-looking casual shoes instead. (Then use Lysol and Febreze liberally.)

If it is not machine-washable, leave it alone.

Go often. Thrift stores constantly receive new items. If there's nothing you like, be willing to walk out empty-handed.
