Proposed Incentives Guidelines Could Rejuvenate Carolina Circle Mall

WFMY News - Greensboro, NC

Greensboro's latest economic incentives proposal could give a facelift to the city's most infamous abandoned business.

Carolina Circle Mall began its slide into obscurity in the 1990's. A proposed incentives strategy would allow the city to award city tax dollars to retailers who want to build in the area.

Mayor Pro-Tem Yvonne Johnson applauds the new guidelines.

"If we don't continue our efforts, five or 10 years from now it's gonna be worse. And we don't want that we want it to be better," she said.

The plan would also give the city council the power to award city funds to businesses for each job they create.

Still council member Tom Phillips questions the impact of those new jobs.

"Someone can come here to work leave after work do their shopping elsewhere. It doesn't necessarily bring anything to our community here," said Phillips.

The incentives plan also targets certain industries for city assistance. Aviation maintenance, bio-technology and finance are among the priority industries.
