white collar union strike?

(submitted to steve's blog by Ken)

Note from Steve: This is more of a Mitch Glaser story, but I thought I'd report on it too.

Kevin Roderick at LA Observed reports on major labor tensions between the Engineer and Architects Association and city goverment in Los Angeles:

Antonio [Villaraigosa] to maybe-strikers: 'Make my day'

  1. Mayor V. has himself to blame for this one. Soon after he got into office, he OK'd a huge raise for engineers at the Department of Water and Power. The EAA folks have been chanting "equal pay for equal work," and they make a good point. Why should engineers at DWP make more than engineers at other City departments?

The disparity may have something to do with the fact that the engineers at DWP can cut off the lights...when their contract was being negotiated, a mysterious blackout took hold of most of the city for nearly a whole day.

  2. Even though the guys at DWP have the power to shut down the city if need be, it's still important for professional designers to get paid a fair wage. I've been both an underpaid architect and civil servent, so I know this issue implicitly :-)
