New York, NY -- Death has stilled the deep, lush voice of R&B singer Luther Vandross.
The Grammy award winner died Friday at the Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. He was 54. The hospital didn't release the cause of death.
Vandross' hits include "Here and Now" and "Any Love." He sold more than 25 million albums.
Since suffering a stroke in his Manhattan home in April, 2003, the crooner stopped making public appearances. But he amazed fans by continuing his recording career. He won four Grammy awards last year as a sentimental favorite, including best song for the bittersweet "Dance With My Father."
Vandross, who was still in a wheelchair at the time, delivered a videotaped thank you. In it, he said: "Remember, when I say goodbye it's never for long.'
