Wal-Mart Dodges Boycott With Apology

chainstoreage.com

Bentonville, Ark. - The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights called off a boycott of Wal-Mart Stores after the retailer apologized for an e-mail that suggested that Christmas originated from many world religions.

The Catholic League had called the boycott after a customer-service employee responded to a customer’s complaint that Wal-Mart had replaced a “Merry Christmas” greeting with “Happy Holidays.” The employee responded that Christmas drew many of its rituals from many ancient peoples including the Visigoths, Celts and Semites.

Wal-Mart said the employee sent the message without review from his superiors and that it does not reflect the company’s opinion. The retailer also said that the employee no longer works for Wal-Mart.

  1. I've been boycotting Wal-Mart for years. Target is the way to go!

  2. The reaction from Walmart (where the employee is concerned) Sounds a bit "over the top" though. It probably isnt their custom to review ALL email responses that their customer service employees send out in response to complaints (though most companies have form letters for various complaints all ready to be copy and pasted in). He or she was probably just an easy target to appease more bad press. While I hate so much of our culture is saying Happy Holidays as opposed to Merry Christmas...The Christmas we Americans celebrate is a merge of many origins and in general doesnt reflect the advent season and Christ's birth very well anyway outside of stained glass windows.

  3. tangerine: Thanks for stopping by. Target and Andy Roddick are great.

Muddy: I think Happy Holidays is more inclusive, but Merry Christmas is more meaningful, as well as Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa. This is just another reason people are using to hate on Wal-Mart, just like last year when people turned against Target for not letting the bell ringers outside their store. Total BS.
