Leather is option for men - even with a suit

NEW YORK - Most men have no problem putting on hiking boots, ski boots or serious winter weather boots. But leather boots?

Gordon Thompson, creative director at Cole Haan, says don't knock them until you try them. "I have a pair on as we speak. ... Boots have a great presence. You can wear them with the right suit; and with jeans, they're a slam dunk," he says.

For this fall, there are essentially three styles of men's fashion boots: sleek riding boots (Cole Haan even offers a wing-tip version); lace-up, ankle-height chukkas; and cowboy boots.

The palette for men's boots is generally dark and earthy, mostly black and brown with some olive and moss greens. Boots with goring - flexible fabric insets around the ankle - will be the easiest to get on and off.

Boots probably will last longer than shoes because they're typically constructed with a durable leather and a hardy heel. Cowboy boots, however, have a flatter heel now than their Wild West inspiration.

"The look is a little more urban," explains Thompson, who predicts cowboy boots will remain a top trend through the spring.
