Federated Won't Reopen New Orleans Macy's

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Macy's store in New Orleans, closed since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, will not reopen, said a spokeswoman for parent company Federated Department Stores Inc.

The store was in the New Orleans Centre near the Louisiana Superdome.

"At this point, we have no immediate plans to reopen at New Orleans Centre, but no stores there have reopened since the storm," spokeswoman Ellen Fruchtman told The Cincinnati Enquirer.

"We are reviewing the downtown market for another site," Fruchtman said. "Overall, we're looking at the total market and how that market is shifting demographically, where it makes sense to open downtown and where it makes sense to open in the suburbs."

A Macy's store in suburban Kenner, La., also has been closed since the hurricane struck. Fruchtman said Federated has no timetable for reopening that store.
