Simon Property Group Inc. plans to open a Belk Inc. department store at the former Lord & Taylor site at the Mall of Georgia in Gwinnett County, Ga.
Indianapolis-based Simon said renovation of the former 120,000-square-foot Lord & Taylor will start in February, with Belk slated to open in April. Charlotte, N.C.-based Belk already has 13 stores in metro Atlanta.
Mall of Georgia's anchor tenants include Nordstrom, Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's, Regal Cinemas and Dick's Sporting Goods.
No knowing you at all, I'm not sure why you posted this, but I think it may be because 14 Belks in one city seems like an awful lot...BUT, those of us who know "metro atlanta" know that it is not. This Belk, at the Mall of Georgia, will be about 30-40 minutes from Midtown Atlanta. "Metro Atlanta" is an amazing example of suburban sprawl that creates a circle around the actual city at least 100 miles in diameter (and it's actually kind of oval so probably further on the North and South). The insanity of the average commute in this Metro area is something that amazes all who venture into it from other parts of the world! So, those people out in Buford are probably really excited to get a Belk (but not as excited as if it were a Walmart, which is understandable).
ReplyDeleteAsk Jocelyn, or browse around the site; you'll see I wasnt horrified, rather, I was impressed Atlanta was geting another Belk.
ReplyDeleteMy mom worked at Belk for 8 years and I practically grew up in their stores. Belk is part of the reason I'm a retail nut. I always felt they should have more presence in a market the size of Atlanta, and it looks like they're finally getting their due.
Oh okay! I just feel the need to explain Atlanta, because it was quite a shock to me when I 1st moved to the area! I live in Athens, which will be part of metro atlanta soon enough, and we already have a Belk, so that should make you happy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment on my blog, it was very kind of you. I'm not really as hard on myself as that probably sounded, I'm just sad about that particular situation. I appreciate the support tho!
Ah, Georgia Square! That's one of the bigger Belks in the state. That DOES make me happy :-)
ReplyDeleteI can understand you feeling sad. Losing a friend is not fun at all, especially when there's not a lot that you can do to remedy the situation.
You're welcome, BTW. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders though, and I'm certain that even though this friend might be a lost cause, there will be someone else who comes into your life that means just as much or more.
