Wal-Mart Customer Arrested after Self-Checkout Mishap

Chain Store Age

GRAPEVINE, Texas - A Wal-Mart customer who was experiencing difficulties with a self-checkout system not working properly was arrested for allegedly punching it out, The Star-Telegram reported.

Joel Wallace Hansen had allegedly scanned two or three items on a self-checkout machine when it locked up while he was in a hurry. Hansen, who is accused of punching and breaking the screen, talked about the incident a day after he was arrested and was released from the Tarrant County Jail on a $1,000 bond. Hansen denied throwing a punch and said he never threatened anyone, despite what employees claim.

Hansen reportedly said that he would work something out with the store about the damage, which was first estimated at $2,000 but has been reduced to $715, and that he should not be charged with criminal mischief.

  1. This one gave my co-workers a good laugh!

On a similar note: most of the newly "automated" bells and whistles at the Plano, TX store, including touch-screens and interactive ordering systems, are already broken. This whole Plano bit is beginning to sound a whole lot like my old Prada bag...pricey and high-end on the outside but shoddy workmanship and completely falling apart from within....

  2. I hadn't heard that, but it's pretty typical. Nothing in Wal-Mart works more than a week, even the cash registers. :-)

  3. i literally just got arrested at the neighborhood Wal-Mart in Bedford,TX yesterday for the same exact thing!
I was trying to pay for a drink with a gift card, and it wouldn't scan, just like the last 3 times I had tried to pay for items with the same card. I was on my way to class, and was in a hurry, so I said to myself "Fuck all of this", and punched the screen, leaving it and my knuckles bloody and shattered. I haven't gotten any word on how much I owe for damages, but i got kicked out of the store.
