Don't stock up on fashion jeans quite yet. There's a sea change ahead in blue jeans' fashion that could make every pair you own today look as dated as something from the '60s. USA Today reports that naval-baring jeans are so yesterday. The newest trend is waistlines that are creeping up toward the bellybutton again. (Whew! That's a sigh of relief for mothers of teenage girls everywhere.)
Sure, those ultra low-slung, hip-hugging styles are still all the rage at the local high school and just about all you can buy at the mall, but if the recent Fashion Week runways are any indication, pants and jeans will soon have a whole new look. As USA Today fashion reporter Olivia Barker so cleverly writes, "And the rest of us are realizing that pant choice shouldn't have to dictate underwear choice."
Why the change? Buyers are demanding higher waists. Look out for the new "mid-rise" or "classic rise" if you want to cover a bit more of your belly. USA Today notes that "low-rise" has become such a standard in recent years, these jeans aren't even marked as such. It's just assumed that is the cut. The array of waistband heights suggests "we've entered into a new era in fashion," Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD Fashionworld, told USA Today. "It's no longer about one way, one size, one trend fits all." Now you may not need a bikini wax or thong underwear just to knock about in a pair of jeans.
