Abercrombie Pulls 'Offensive' Shirts

chainstoreage.com

New Albany, Ohio - In the face of criticism and calls for boycotts, Abercrombie & Fitch agreed to stop selling shirts with controversial messages. One of the shirts read across the chest: “Who needs brains when you have these?”

The Women & Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania said they were satisfied with Abercrombie & Fitch's decision to remove what it called “several offensive t-shirts from its stores.

In a statement, the retailer said: “We recognize that the shirts in question, while meant to be humorous, might be troubling to some.”

  1. It's always the squeaky wheel that gets oiled...in my industry one damn customer complaint/threat and we have to pull the offending product off of every shelf. Some people have no sense of humor. Not to say I condone Abercrombie...but if you don't like it, then by all means just don't buy it!

  2. Every couple of years Abercrombie gets into some sort of controversey concerning something printed on their clothes. One year, they insulted Asians. The next, West Virginians. Now it's women with large breasts.

I don't fault them for trying to pushing the envelope. A lot of great ideas have come from taking risks. But a lot of times I think they're doing themselves a dis-service by putting themselves out there like that.

Still, I think the controversies are a little silly and if people really want to bring A&F down, they'll ignore them. Bringing publicity only makes people support them more, because a lot of people who feel the same or similar ways to the message will go buy stuff from them to support their shared point of view.
