If you have any memories of shopping at Belk stores in the 1970s, this should bring back a wave of nostalgia. I found this old bag in my basement in pretty horrible shape, so I decided to make a scan of it for posterity.
That takes me way back! I grew up in the Gallant Belk store in downtown Anderson, SC. It had a "bargain annex" across the street. There was an old-fashioned elevator where there was a woman who 'operated it" for you, cage doors and everything. Remember the jingle, "Belk, your happy shoping store."

ReplyDeleteI actually don't remember the jingle, but I remember those bags and the big rugs at the doors with the slogan on them.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that elevator was a beauty. I don't think I've ever seen a manually operated one in person.
Thanks for sharing that bag scan. I love it...and yes, is vaguely familiar to me.
ReplyDeleteI thought you might like that, Muddy. I think they need to bring the allover logo design back. It's a lot more distinctive than the current bags.
