An employee at Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, MI was hit in the face with a flip-flop sandal while trying to detain two shoplifters Monday, police said.

Employees at the Von Maur department store witnessed two girls take shirts into a dressing room, and leave empty-handed, according to a report in The Ann Arbor News. The girls were brought to a store office, but one became uncooperative and tried to run, according to the report.

One of the employees, a 46-year-old woman, said she attempted to stop the girl. The girl then took off her flip-flop sandal and hit the employee in the face, the paper reported.

The girl then ran into the mall. Police located her a short time later at the Blake Transit Center, the paper reported.

Employees found three shirts in a backpack belonging to the second girl.

The girls were released to their parents. Charges are pending in juvenile court, according to the report.

  1. Ah, the sheer stupidity of the general public...what idiots!

By the way...I've shopped that mall before in Ann Arbor...not the classiest joint by any means.

  2. I read the article and thought to myself, "Okay, if you think you're gonna possibly shoplift at the mall, why the hell would you ride the bus to the mall AND wear flip flops?" LOL

Were it me, I'd probably pick more secure footwear and/or at least have a friend with a getaway car nearby. Sheesh, haven't they seen the movies?

Well, I guess if they were that smart, they wouldn't be shoplifting :-)
